TOYO Knife Grinder

Toyo has a complete line of grinding machines ranging from very simple machines to our NC type machine.  Recently, Toyo has developed a new configuration of features for their KGV-SF-CDX grinding machine that is available to the Veneer Industry.  These features are designed to economically produce a polished micro-bevel on both top and backside of your knives.

The Toyo KGV-SF22-CDX is the ideal machine for grinding lathe knives and slicer knives.  Everything about the Toyo Grinder is over built.  The base is manufactured from welded steel plate and is extremely rigid.  For example, the 4000 mm (157”) machine weighs more than 14,000 pounds.  The Slideways are 38 mm wide and made from a solid high carbon tool steel which are precisely hardened and tempered.  The standard chuck is 230 mm wide with magnetic strips every 24 mm.

The Toyo Super Finisher is a device that allows a grinderman the ability to mechanically hone knives without removing the knives from the magnetic chuck.  The SFII Super Finisher is a high-speed secondary head that is equipped with a 4”Ø honing stone.  The stone travels at 3600 rpm and can be supplied in either 1500 or 2000 grit.  The Super Finisher puts a mirror bright edge on your knives that is 0.5 mm in width. This is a time saver and insures that each knife is ground and finished to the same high tolerances.

This is a very reliable and easy to operate machine.  There are no computer controls.  The entire machine is controlled by relays and electro-mechanical devices which are easy to maintain and readily available.

Recently, the engineers at Toyo developed the KGV-40SF22-CDX.  This machine improves on the their prior design, by adding a second Super Finisher for back-side honing.  A small bevel of between 1° and 4° has proven to provide a superior and more consistent edge, that lasts longer and is more chip resistant.  Knife life has been improved up to 40% at our current installations.  The following are the basic specifications for the KGV-40SF22-CDX.

The manual controls for the backside Super Finisher consist of a rapid infeed control and a micro infeed control.  The rapid infeed control handle is located on the top of the unit.  The graduated circumferential plate is divided into 200 equal parts, with each graduation representing 0.02 mm (0.0008”).  Each rotation of this handle results in a 4 mm (0.157”) vertical movement.  The micro infeed control handle is located on the front of the unit.  Its graduated circumferential plate is divided into 40 equal parts, with each graduation representing 0.002 mm (0.00008”).  Each rotation of this handle will result in a 0.08 mm (0.003”) vertical movement.  Therefore, to achieve a similar land area on the front and back side of the knife, the operator will rotate the micro infeed handle 1/4 turn, once per pass, for approximately 5 passes.
